Bored at home during the holiday season?

These simple projects are a fun, inexpensive way of involving the whole family. Weltevreden Park’s DIY diva, Janice Anderssen, shows you how!

The art of pizza
We all love pizza, so why not use all those empty boxes and create a masterpiece?
You need:
• Pizza boxes (small, medium or large)
• Wallpaper or thick wrapping paper or fabric
• Bostik spray (available at craft shops)
• Ruler
• Craft or utility knife
• Scissors
• Double-sided tape to mount onto wall
1. Cut a sheet of the preferred material, long enough to fold over the sides.
2. Spray the back of the preferred material, the front and sides of the box with Bostik spray adhesive and leave for five minutes.
3. Place the front of the box on the preferred material, make sure to position it in the centre and press down.
4. Cut all four corners diagonally. Fold the two opposite side over. Don’t fold all the sides over yet, because you need to fold neat corners.
5. Fold the edges/corners of the sides that you have just folded over onto the other sides – See photo.
6. On the other two corners, trim the edges straight and then spray adhesive onto the corners that you have just folded over. Wait for five minutes.
7. Now fold the other sides onto the edges. Use a craft knife to cut away any excess at the back.

Paper plate frisbees
You need:
• Two paper plates for each frisbee
• Colourful markers or crayons
• Scissors
• Clear packing tape
1. Place both plates right side up (as if you were going to put food on them). Cover them with clear packing tape, allowing the excess tape to overlap, but do not fold it over. Cut off the excess around the plate.
2. Turn the plates upside down and use markers or crayons to decorate your Frisbee. When you are finished decorating the Frisbee, draw a circle in the centre of both your plates and neatly cut it out. Both circles need to be the same size.
3. Place both plates, decorated side facing upwards, separately onto your work surface. Use clear packing tape to cover the decorated side. Fold the edges over through the center circle and trim the edges of the outside of the plate.
4. Place both plates together, decorative sides facing upwards and tape the edges together.

Wool tree ornaments
You need:

• Wool in different colours
• Bag of balloons
• White craft glue
1. Make a mixture of glue and water, to make it easier to spread. Don’t add too much water, just enough to make the glue a little thinner.
2. Blow up the balloons until they are about 5 cm in diameter.
3. Wrap a large amount of wool around your hand to avoid it getting all tangled up. Dip the wool into the glue and water mixture. Make sure all the wool is submerged. Drain the excess glue/water mixture by squeezing it out.
4. Wrap the wool around the balloon, in every way you prefer.
5. Once you have covered the majority of the balloon, cut off the excess wool not used and tuck in the end.
6. Dip the wrapped balloon once more in the glue/ water mixture. Carefully squeeze the balloon to get rid of the excess mixture.
7. Let the wrapped balloon dry overnight (still inflated).
8. Make sure the wool has completely dried. If not, leave for another day. When it is dry, pop the balloon! Tie a string to the decorative ball to hang it.
