#FestiveSeason: What to do if your animal gets lost

Owners should take extra steps during the Festive Season period to keep their pets safe.

It’s said more dogs get lost during the Christmas and New Year period than at any other time of the year.

Owners should take extra steps during this period to keep their pets safe this festive season.

Some experts say that it is natural for dogs to be afraid of loud noises. The sounds trigger their nervous systems, and they can become anxious or afraid. Running away from the noise is a survival instinct.

The best advice a dog owner could give is to make sure your pets are wearing proper identification, such as a collar or a name tag, during this time. It is also advisable to microchip your dog. This allows them to be scanned if they end up at a veterinarian or the SPCA. This microchip contains the address of the owner and a contact number.

What should you do if your dog goes missing during Christmas or New Year?

Here are a few tips on what to do if your dog goes missing:

• Look at your nearest SPCA

• Print posters and distribute them

• Make a public post on every social media page

• Ask around in your neighborhood
