Places to go during the Festive Season

Looking for an attraction to entertain the family during the Festive Season, but don't know where to go?

While backyard braais or mass family get-togethers accompanied by well-cooked meals are usually the way to go for South Africans, there are many other options for the Festive Season.

The Herald has compiled a list of destinations to visit, and why not?

• If you are looking for a spiritual adventure over Christmas, then this is for you.

Places like the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo, Bodhi Khaya in the Overberg, Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge in Limpopo and the Blue Butterfly Retreat Centre in the Welbedacht Nature Reserve are recommended.

• Garden Route

The Garden Route is a stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa which extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. This route traverses an area rich in natural beauty and charm.

No evidence of man, just nature and tracts of land. Places like the Cedarberg Wilderness Area, Boosmansbos Wilderness Area, Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area and Doringrivier Wilderness Area are recommended.

The Kruger National Park is a world-renowned park of nearly 2 million hectares that features 16 ecosystems. Be adventurous and spot the Big Five on a 4 x 4 game drive or walking safari. There are other reserves, such as the Dinokeng Game Reserve, Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve and Pilanesberg National Park and Game Reserve, to visit.

• What SA’s beautiful coastline has to offer

Try the Sunshine Coast, ‘which starts where the Garden Route ends and stretches all the way to East London, covering much of the Eastern Cape’s coastline, and is as good as it gets – sunshine 320 out of 365 days of the year’ or, the Wild Coast. Rugged and untamed, the Wild Coast offers deserted beaches, dolphins, horseback- and hiking trails, cosy hotels, golf, gambling, mystical history, Xhosa heritage and the Hole-in-the-Wall. Durban, also known as South Africa’s sunshine city, offers something for the entire family, including golden beaches, surfing and a marine park. – need we say more.
