Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, has informed the Herald about a couple of recent scams which have had the whole country up in arms.
People all over South Africa recently received messages from an unknown person informing them that a case had been opened against them or that they had an outstanding fine. The message advises people to contact a Captain Sithole or another Captain.
“The message or the people you phone ask you to pay an amount of money before a certain time. They ask you for an EFT payment or an internet payment,” said Ernst.
She confirmed to the Herald that it is a scam and said people should not fall into the trap.
Another scam going around informs you your stolen vehicle has been found in a roadblock and if you pay a specific amount you will get it back.
“Please warn your friends and family about these scams,” said Ernst.
