#FestiveSeason safety hints: Take heed of the following, police warn

Police: Join hands with us and together we can enjoy a safer, crime-free festive season.

The police would like to warn the community to take heed of the following festive season safety hints and assist law enforcement agencies in taking measures regarding stolen goods, ATMs, children, hitchhiking and road safety.

According to Captain Sergio Kock, “The fight against crime is everyone’s responsibility and we appeal to the community to join hands with us so that we can enjoy a crime-free and safer festive season together. The police and our partners will be out in full force to ensure that you, the community, are safe. Those who break the law will face the full might of the judicial system. #CRIME MUST FALL.”

Kock added, “As the police, we will be performing special operations in line with Operation Safer Festive Season to ensure the safety of our people. Proactive measures need to be in place in order to ensure that everyone enjoys a crime-free festive season.”

On the subject of road safety, the police advise the community not to speed. Do not text or speak on your cellphone while driving. Stop and rest frequently.

We’d also like to warn people, especially women, not to hitchhike, as this can be very dangerous. You do not know the person giving you a lift and by accepting a lift you are placing your life in danger.

Furthermore, know the whereabouts of your children at all times. Do not leave them unattended. Always make sure that they have adult supervision when they are at malls or shopping centres. Remember that if a child goes missing, there is NO waiting period to report that person as missing. Time is of the essence, so it should be done immediately.

As for ATMs, the police said shopping centres and the CBD will be buzzing with people doing their Christmas shopping during the holiday season. Be vigilant when transacting at ATMs. Make sure that your handbag is close to your body and clutched tightly. Never put your wallet in the back pocket of your jeans/pants.

The community is urged to reject stolen items offered for sale, and to report stolen goods to the police or Crime Stop 08600 10111.

Don’t ignore barking dogs. Housebreakers will rarely enter through the front door of a house, but dogs will alert you of exactly where they are. Phone the police immediately about any suspicious or unusual activity.
