The man who stabbed and killed Thabani Mhlongo, then 29, at a local tavern in Spooktown, Bekkersdal on 1 August 2016, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail.
The Westonaria Regional Court concluded the murder case with a 15-year direct imprisonment sentence for the murderer.
“It is alleged Mhlongo was at a local tavern listening to music on a jukebox when the suspect decided to switch it off.
The suspect was confronted by the other patrons but instead turned to the victim and stabbed him randomly with a sharp object,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police.
He was later taken to the Bekkersdal Emergency Medical Service (EMS) where he died as a result of his injuries. A case of murder was reported to the police, and the suspect was traced and arrested. He was charged with murder and was denied bail. The intensive investigation led by detective Sergeant Hendrick Moiloa, led to the killer being found guilty and sentenced.

Lieutenant Colonel Albert van Rooyen, the acting station commander, commended Moiloa on a job well done and thanked the community for supplying the information that led to the apprehension of the suspect.
“This sentence will serve as closure for the family and a deterrent to other would-be murderers.”
