Cansa Relay for Life postponed – here’s why

This year's Cansa Relay for Life had to be postponed. The Cansa head office and the Relay committee explain why ...

The Cansa Relay for Life, scheduled for Saturday 25 November, had, unfortunately, to be postponed due to the much-needed rain that came down in torrents.

This annual long-awaited event is one of the most looked forward to events in the town. Thea Wille, community mobiliser, explained to the Herald that the day had to be postponed because of unforeseen circumstances and by mutual agreement between Cansa head office and the Relay committee.

“This would have been the fifth Cansa Relay for Life held in Randfontein, by the community for the community. There is good news however, for the people who would not have been able to attend. The event has not been cancelled – it’s merely been postponed to early 2018, so you still have a chance to attend this important and enjoyable event,” said Thea.

The main purpose for hosting the event is to celebrate, remember and fight back against the terrible disease, cancer. The most important people at the day are the survivors, who are treated to a celebration lunch.

Although the weather was wet and cold, many cancer survivors and their caregivers came to the sports field at Riebeeckrand School, where they enjoyed, by invitation, a much-appreciated lunch sponsored by the Randfontein Spur and had the opportunity to share their personal stories with fellow survivors.

Cansa wants to invite interested parties to contact them, either to enroll a team or participate in the entertainment at the next relay.

“Cansa Relay for Life is not just about honoring survivors, it is about empowering them to fight back against cancer,” said Thea.

Why should you participate?

• Everyone’s reason is unique.

• Everyone is affected by cancer somehow

• The event brings people together in the community

• With every step you take, you are helping Cansa in the fight against cancer

The exact date is 27 January 2018.
