Rapists sentenced to 18 years

The two accused will effectively serve 18 years' imprisonment each.

Two accused were sentenced in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty on charges of rape and assault. The crimes were committed in October 2015.

It was alleged that the 45-year-old victim was walking along the Zuurbekom road, when she was assaulted from behind with an iron rod. Two men then raped her. According to police spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst, the attackers also threatened her with a knife. They were arrested shortly after the case was reported.

“Constable Paulet Mapena was assigned to investigate the case and with dedication and perseverance, she managed to secure 18 years’ imprisonment sentences for rape, and an additional three years’ imprisonment for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm,” said Ernst

The 27-year-old Makasane Tkuntsmame and the 38-year-old Morapedi Santi will effectively serve 18 years’ imprisonment each,” said Ernst.

“We are proud of the way in which Constable Mapena investigated and finalised the case. Our congratulations to the NPA and the judicial system for the stance that was taken in this case.

These sentences make the work of the FCS rewarding,” said FCS commander, Lieutenant Colonel Kathy Segotta.
