Fighting crime, one step at a time

Police, the CPF, residents, and security companies joined hands and patrolled the streets of Randfontein on Friday, 24 November.

With the town being hit hard by crime lately, the police, the Community Protection Forum (CPF), residents, and security companies joined hands and patrolled the streets of Randfontein on Friday, 24 November.

The cold and rain did not stand in the way of the dedicated patrollers of Sector 5A as officers from the Police and members of EPR Security took on the elements in yet another successful anti-crime awareness campaign.

A total of 16 CPF vehicles, three police vehicles and one EPR vehicle patrolled through Greenhills, Randfontein CBD, Homelake, Randgate, Helikonpark, Culemborgpark, Bootha Plots, Loumarina, Ooster Plots, Rand Ridge, Dwarskloof and Wheatlands. Together, the 25 CPF patrollers, seven police members and one EPR tactical support unit covered a total of 125 hours and 1 138 km.

CPF patrollers led by local police members visited different areas in Randfontein, with the aim of encouraging residents to voice their concerns when it comes to crimes in the area.

“We hope that the community will take to heart the safety tips shared during these awareness campaigns and that together we can curb crime in Randfontein,” said Henry Boyce, CPF Sector 5A chairperson and operational coordinator.

Boyce told the Herald that the main reason for the campaign was to create awareness among the community.

The following activities were carried out:

• 14 premises were searched

• 52 pedestrians were searched

• Four people were arrested on drug charges

• One drunk driver was arrested

Boyce would like to thank Warrant Officer Fanus van der Merwe for all the effort, dedication and support he gives to the CPF. He would also like to thank all the hard-working dedicated patrollers and EPR Security for fighting the fight and walking the extra mile for the safety of Randfontein.

“We would like to invite more community members to be part of the CPF and the next awareness campaign,” said Boyce.
