Eight new traffic officers for R’fontein

"If you break the rules, you must be punished." – Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo.

Eight traffic recruits graduated from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Traffic Academy on Tuesday 21 November, and are now officially qualified traffic officers.

The former Randfontein Local Municipality sent a total of nine recruits to the Academy, where they did a year-long traffic officer course. Kenny Mampondo, Chief of Rand West City Traffic Department, said he is very proud and happy that eight of them can now contribute to their department. The ninth recruit was unfortunately unable to complete the course, due to an accident.

Mapondo said that now is a very good time for these traffic officers to join the force, as they are preparing for the coming busy festive season. He also said he had a personal conversation with them, where he mentioned everything that is expected from a respectable traffic officer, in and out of uniform.

” I told the officers that they must not accept any money whatsoever from any road users that have broken the law. If you break the rules, you must be punished. If you accept bribes, you are not contributing to this Traffic Department,” he told them.

He also explained to them that there will be challenges, such as dealing with criminals, but they must not succumb to these persons. “You are here to serve and protect the community, and also educate all road users,” he continued.

He also said that the department has so many more challenges, now that the former Westonaria and Randfontein Municipalities have merged into the Rand West City Local Municipality.

” The N12 is a major challenge,” he said.
