Housebreaker, 18, sentenced to 18 months

An 18-year-old convicted and sentenced to 18 months direct imprisonment for housebreaking and theft.

James Makhaya is set to spend 18 months behind bars.

The 18-year-old was convicted and sentenced for housebreaking and theft by the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 9 November. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said, “The suspect was arrested shortly after he broke into a house and stole groceries and electrical appliances. It is alleged that on 14 September 2017, the victim left his home for work but decided to return unexpectedly.

“That was when he saw someone jumping over his wall and upon investigation he realised the person had just broken into his house. He contacted the police, but the burglar had fled on foot by the time they arrived.

“A case of housebreaking and theft was registered and through an investigation led by detective Constable Tshepo Mashala, the burglar was apprehended, detained and denied bail.”

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the both the constable and the prosecution team on a job well done.
