Hit-and-run victim – the mystery and the tragedy

" Ai, ai Hein, ek kan dit nie glo nie. Rus sag my kind. "

The tragic death of 25-year-old Heinrich Cronje on the N12 on Sunday morning, 12 November, has shocked the community and left an empty space in the lives of many.

Cronjé died in a hit-and-run accident while walking home along the N12. His family reported him missing on Sunday. He was wearing a black Puma t-shirt, Levi jeans and brown cowboy boots at the time of the incident.

The Westonaria Police spokesperson,Warrant Officer Raymond Sebanyane, said that a docket of culpable homicide is under investigation.

On that fateful morning, a vehicle knocked him down, but the driver failed to stop. A second vehicle also drove over him. The driver of this vehicle stopped and called for help.

Cronje’s body was taken to the Carletonville mortuary, where he was identified on Monday morning, 13 November.

Messages of condolences, some of which are quoted below, have streamed in on social media after his family and friends were notified.

• “Ai, ai Hein, ek kan dit nie glo nie. Rus sag my kind.”

• “My vriend, kan nou nog nie glo jy is weg nie. Waar gaan ek nou ‘n koffie drink na werk. Jy gaan gemis word, my vriend en mens kon altyd staat gemaak het op jou. Hoop net nie jy en oom Rasie is te stout daar bo nie. Tot ons mekaar weer sien.”

• “Dis so hartseer om te dink dat ons so lekker gekuier het Saterdag en nou gaan ons jou nooit weer sien nie … Ons harte is in stukke!!! Ons gaan jou verskriklik mis.”
