Cooke Plant –Two men killed in shoot-out

Both victims had allegedly lived in the Randfontein Dumping Site informal settlement – Captain Ernst.

On Thursday, 16 November, at approximately 6am, there was another shooting incident behind the Cooke Plant, in which two men died.

The Randfontein Police were informed of the incident and officers and police members were dispatched.

Upon arrival they were informed that two groups of illegal miners had once again had a gun battle during the previous evening.

“It was alleged that people had died as a result of this shooting,” said Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police.

The group of police officers on the scene started an intensive search in the area, also deploying a Porter aircraft from the Police Airwing, in order to assist with the search for the bodies.

A four-hour search resulted in the discovery of two male bodies in the densely overgrown area. One of the bodies had been burned, while the other was badly mutilated. Both had sustained gunshot wounds.

The bodies were later identified by family and friends of the deceased.

Both men had allegedly lived in the Randfontein Dumping Site informal settlement.

The Randfontein Police are in urgent need of any information that might assist in the tracing and apprehension of the perpetrators. Informants are requested to call the police station on 011 767 2379 /2350.

Any information regarding the possession of unlicensed firearms may also be communicated to Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information may be given anonymously.
