Illegal miners clash: One dead, two injured

The deceased was shot and stoned, say the police, after two groups of illegal miners clashed in Randfontein.

One person died and another two people were injured when two groups of illegal miners clashed in an open field behind the Cooke Plant in Randfontein on Monday.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, confirmed they are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder after a fight between two groups, allegedly illegal miners, resulted in the death of one person and injuries to two more at about 11pm on Monday, 13 November.

“A group of approximately eight illegal miners went to mine behind Cooke Plant. They allegedly encountered another group of miners. It is further alleged that the arriving group opened fire on the first group and then fled towards the ridge. Two men sustained gunshot wounds to their legs, while a third died.

“The deceased was shot and stoned. Although the name of the deceased is known, his age is not. The injured victims were taken to a local hospital.”
