The Randfontein Police are to keep a watchful eye over the serious rape and abuse reports at the local dumping site.
On Thursday, 9 November, the Randfontein Police released a statement regarding the incident in which a large number of adults and children fled from the Randfontein Dumping Site.

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police, said they could confirm that the issues pertaining to crime in the Dumping site (Landfill) area received immediate attention from the Randfontein Police Crime Prevention unit.
“Numerous operations to conduct searches and tracing suspects in the area were conducted since the rape cases were reported in that area. Raiding operations in the area yielded results,” said Ernst.
“The Randfontein Police are committed to ensuring the safety of all our residents and will continue with strategies to safeguard our communities as best we can,” said the Randfontein Visible Policing Commander, Colonel Rand Makgatho.
About 60 adults and 17 children initially fled from the Randfontein Dump Site and found a temporary safe haven, after enduring three years of abuse and rape. Most of the women and children later left the safe haven, some going to their families, and others returning to the dumping site in fear, leaving the others behind. However, the remaining 10 adults and nine children had to vacate their place of safety on Wednesday, 8 November.

Rashida Abrahams, from Westview Clinic, Kemajo coach, youth activist and Chairperson for the Randfontein Youth Crime Prevention organisation was eventually able to meet with the Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, Tshidiso Thlaripe and the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) Annah Gela from the Department of Health and Social development on Wednesday, 8 November.
At the meeting, it was decided that the remaining women and children would stay with one of Rashida’s relatives until December, and in the meantime the Rand West City Local Municipality will look for job opportunities for them.
