A couple’s passion for humanity
A soup kitchen opened up by a couple at their home in Mohlakeng is still going strong.
A local couple continues to help needy and hungry children at their home, by running an Ebuhleni Home Based Care Centre, an NGO, in Mohlakeng Extension 4.
Mzimeni and Mpho Funeka, said they originally had a few children come to their house for food in the mornings and after school, which is why they decided to open up the soup kitchen.
“It was then we saw fit to feed the children,” said Mzimeni. “We have been in operating since 2008, but only registered in 2010, and since then there has been an increasing demand for our help. We do have a database of those whom we help, but there are frequently new faces, and we cannot chase them away.”
The soup kitchen operates daily from Monday to Friday.
“We wanted to feed more children during the week, but we can’t, because of a lack of donations. We rely on donations from individual business people and appeal for more donations in any form, be it financial or material in form of shoes, clothing and so on,” added Mpho.
Apart from the soup kitchen, the care centre offers recreational and extramural activities for the children in the form of a soccer club and Tswana and gumboot dancing, thus keeping the children out of mischief.
