Man found guilty of murder, jailed for 12 years

Bekkersdal man sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment – of which five years were suspended – for a murder in November 2016

Gift Mohlakwana, 27, has been convicted and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment – of which five years were suspended – for a murder he committed on 28 November 2016.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said, “It is alleged the accused assaulted Given Maswanganyi, 28, with bricks and an unknown object, which resulted in Maswanganyi’s death.

“Mohlakwana later fled to Lenasia where he was arrested on 23 March 2017 with the assistance of the deceased’s brother. He was charged with murder and denied bail.

Through investigations led by detective Sergeant Phillimon Shiviti, who followed up on information and completed the investigation, he was convicted and sentenced.”

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander applauded the investigating officer’s efforts and welcomed the sentence.

“Even though they will never get to see their beloved brother again, we hope the family will get closure. Justice has been served,” Nkhwashu said.
