Ntsikelelo Mbungu, 32, has been sentenced to one year in jail for theft out of a motor vehicle – a crime he committed at a shopping centre on 29 July this year.

According to Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane, Westonaria Police spokesperson, “It is alleged that the complainant had parked his vehicle in the parking area. He then pressed the immobiliser and went into the shop. When he came back he found that his house keys, memory stick, Garmin GPS and two-cylinder air compressor had been stolen but the vehicle was not broken into.

“The victim went to nearby shop to ask if he could have a look at their CCTV footage and was able to see the suspect. Later they found the suspect next to the butchery in Briggs Street, still in possession of the GPS.

The suspect then took the complainant to the place where he had stashed the rest of the stolen property,” said Sebonyane.

The complainant then handed the suspect over to the Westonaria Police and a docket of theft out of a motor vehicle was opened and investigated by Constable Ntlama.

Constable Ntlama continued with the investigation until the suspect was convicted on 23 October in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Makhuba applauded the complainant for working with the police.
