Man imprisoned 12 years for robbery

A man has been sentenced to 12 years for robbing a woman and strangling her at a bus stop last year.

A 34-year-old man, Nelson Alicidio Gaziti, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for a robbery he committed in August last year.

Westonaria Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane said, “On 26 August 2016, a woman was waiting for transport at a bus stop on Edwards Avenue, Westonaria. Suddenly an unknown man attacked her from behind. He struck her with an unknown object and strangled her.

“The attacker ran away with the victim’s cooler bag containing her lunch, a cellphone and purse with cash. The victim was assisted by a school-bus driver who apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.

“A case docket of robbery was opened and Warrant Officer Willie Padi investigated the case. The accused was convicted and sentenced by the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 4 October 2017.”

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, the Westonaria Police station commander applauded the community member for handing over the suspect to the police.
