UPDATE: Death toll from gruesome crash in Ten Acres rises to four.

The death toll in Sunday morning’s gruesome crash in Ten Acres has risen to four.

The Herald reported on Tuesday that three people were killed and one person was airlifted to hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in allegedly rolled. New information provided to the Herald has revealed that the person who was airlifted by the ER24 Emergency Services helicopter died when he reached the hospital.

The owner of the vehicle, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was found walking around on the scene, saying, “My brother … my brother.”

It is believed that the brother was driving the vehicle, which was bought only one month ago. The men, all aged in their 20s, were not far from their destination when they went around a sharp bend, and allegedly lost control of the vehicle, which first crashed into a palisade fence, then hit a tree, rolled and then landed on its wheels.

The scene of the accident was like something from a horror movie – two of the victims were lying in the road, while a third was half inside the vehicle with his legs hanging out. It is alleged that they were coming from a wedding.

The palisade fencing into which the vehicle crashed is on a property owned by Perrie and Michelle Senekal, who believe the owner is still alive. They heard the crash and when they went to investigate, they saw a security vehicle and a tow-truck on the scene. They had already cordoned off the road.

The remains of the gate the vehicle crashed into.

Louretta Valentine, an eyewitness who was on her way to Randfontein said the vehicle was coming from the direction of Carletonville on Main Road. She said, “In my rear-view mirror I saw a Mini Cooper, travelling at a tremendous speed”. According to her, the driver did not seem to be in total control of the vehicle. “I did not see them slacking down towards the sharp turn ahead. When I came around the bend, I saw smoke. The Mini had just landed back on its wheels.

“I saw some of the occupants lying in and next to the vehicle. I called a security company, which responded immediately. An off-duty police officer was also on scene, as was another security company.” Valentine added that one of the security company members mentioned the strong stench of alcohol.

Perrie Senekal said that the family arrived on the scene later. On Monday, they were back, to pick up the belongings of their loved ones. On Tuesday, they returned to clean the blood from the road.

On Wednesday, 25 October, the Herald visited the scene, and saw about nine beer and spritzer bottles lying close to the remains of the vehicle.

Michelle Senekal said this wasn’t the first time that a vehicle had crashed through their gates. “There are no street lights and motorists speed on this road. There is not even a sign to indicate that there is a sharp turn up ahead. Something needs to be done about this!” She also said there is no indication of the speed limit on Main Road.

An official report from the police is still awaited.
