Sleeping woman woken by intruders

Sleeping woman, 23, wakes to sibling's scream as armed intruders strike at a home in Randfontein.

Police in Bekkersdal have launched a manhunt for a group of armed suspects after a 23-year-old woman was robbed at her home shortly after midnight on Sunday, 22 October.

The incident happened on Cindi Street in Bekkersdal.

“It is alleged the victim was asleep at her home with her siblings when she was awakened by her younger sister screaming,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

She got up to investigate and was accosted by two males – one armed with a knife, the other wielding a firearm and wearing a balaclava.

They both threatened the victim and demanded money and phones. There was no money so they took a portable DVD player and one cellphone and fled on foot.

“The suspects are still at large but they can be identified,” said Lefakane.

The station commander, Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, urges the community to ensure their houses are properly secured before going to bed or away to prevent criminals gaining easy access.

“This could have been more serious, as the victims were women,” he added.
