Latest W’aria crime stats: Crime is down overall

Good news for those living in Westonaria as the overall crime rate has gone down.

Crime in Westonaria is down overall, according to the latest crime statistics released by the police on Wednesday.

The statistics cover the period April 2016 to March 2017 and indicate that crimes against persons, property-related crimes and other serious crimes all showed a decrease, except contact-related crimes and crimes detected as a result of police action.

Among the 33 crimes named in the statistics, 19 showed a decrease and only eight showed an increase:

Contact crimes against a person (overall decrease of 16,3 per cent):

• Murder – down by 14,3 per cent

• Sexual offences – down by 47,1 per cent

• Attempted murder – down by 21,4 per cent

• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm – down by 30,7 per cent

• Common assault – down by 6,6 per cent

• Common robbery – down by 18,2 per cent

• Robbery with aggravating circumstances – down by 10,9 per cent

Sexual offences (overall decrease of 47,1 per cent):

• Rape – down by 53,5 per cent

• Sexual assault – remained the same

• Attempted sexual offences – no cases

• Contact sexual offences – down by 100 per cent

Subcategories of aggravated robberies (overall decrease of 20,7 per cent):

• Carjacking – up by 3,6 per cent

• Truck hijacking – down by 14,3 per cent

• Robbery of cash-in-transit – no cases

• Bank robbery – no cases

• Robbery at residential premises – down by 23,5 per cent

• Robbery at non-residential premises – down by 40 per cent

• Trio crimes – down by 21,1 per cent

Contact-related crimes (overall increase of 3,4 per cent):

• Arson – up by three

• Malicious damage to property – up by 0,8 per cent

Property-related crimes (overall decrease of 6,9 per cent):

• Burglary at non-residential premises – down by 22,2 per cent

• Burglary at residential premises – remained the same

• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle – up by 12,3 per cent

• Theft out of or from motor vehicle – down by 28,5 per cent

• Stock-theft – down by 19 per cent

Other serious crimes (overall decrease of 6,4 per cent):

• All theft not mentioned elsewhere – down by 1,5 per cent

• Commercial crime – up by 9,9 per cent

• Shoplifting – up by 7,3 per cent

• Other serious crimes – up by 1,8 per cent

Crimes detected as a result of police action (overall increase of 3,9 per cent):

• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition – down by 66,7 per cent

• Drug-related crime – down by 25,6 per cent

• Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs – up by 19,7 per cent

• Sexual offences detected as a result of police action – no cases
