Man denied bail for tampering with electricity

Police warns against illegal electrical connections after a man was first arrested, then denied bail.

A 35-year-old man was arrested by the Bekkersdal Crime Prevention Unit for tampering with Eskom infrastructure.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the incident happened at about 10am on Friday, 13 October

She told the Herald it is alleged the officers were conducting their routine patrol duties when they spotted a group of people busy connecting illegal electricity from the Eskom sub-station along Khomo-ea-hlaba Street.

The officers then approached the group and the suspects then started running in different directions. The officers managed to catch one from the group.

“He was immediately placed under arrest for tampering with the sub-station and was charged accordingly. He made a brief court appearance on Monday, 16 October and was denied bail,” said Lefakane.

Lieutenant Colonel Thembekile Shibiri, the Acting Bekkersdal Police Station Commander applauded the members for a job well done.

“This must serve as a warning to other community members that everyone who will be caught stealing or damaging Eskom infrastructure will be brought to book and justice shall prevail,” said Shibiri.
