R’fontein meets little exotic friends

There was a European Polecat, that the normal resident do not often see.

On Saturday, 30 September, the Herald met some interesting creatures at the Sungate Farms birthday celebration.

Second Chance Animal Rescue (Scar), a non-profit organisation (NPO) hosted a fun and interactive show at Sungate Farms, and educated the children and adults about these exotic animals and how to safely interact with them.

The Herald journalist could not resist approaching a man who was walking with a bearded dragon and a leopard gecko. This brought great entertainment to the children who joined their parents at the Sungate Farms Spring Adventure Run.

The friendly and very active fennec fox was the centre of attention and the European polecat was a rare sight. The large rabbit, a hedgehog, a racoon and a monitor lizard were among the favourites, although not everybody was that keen to get too close to the various tarantulas on display. There were even hissing cockroaches and scorpions.

Scar also promotes pet sterilisation, which they do at an affordable price. Mandie Surman, a member of the NPO, proudly said that by that Sunday they have sterilised 1 000 animals so far this year.
