Another person caught with illegal firearm

Local police caught yet another person carrying a firearm unlawfully in Randfontein.

Another person was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The Bekkersdal Intervention Team arrested the 31-year-old after midnight on 23 September after they had found the firearm in the vehicle of which he was the driver.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson explained the events. “Constables Lorraine Ndlovu and Sibusiso Nonkonyane were conducting their routine patrol duties around Bekkersdal when they spotted a vehicle with three occupants.

“They allegedly stopped the vehicle and were surprised to see the occupants opening the door and running away, leaving the driver behind. Police members requested to search the driver and his vehicle.

Under the driver’s seat, Constable Ndlovu found a firearm with serial number filed off. When the driver could not produce a licence for it, he was arrested.”

In September the Randfontein Police warned residents who are in possession of firearms which are not properly licensed, and explained that an alarming number of firearms that used to belong to people who had died years ago were in circulation in Randfontein.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said, “The Randfontein Police Firearm Registration Centre has therefore initiated a project to address the unlawful possession of firearms. The FRC members will be calling on the addresses of the deceased firearm owners to verify what happened to the firearms.

“The firearms haven’t been re-registered and no permits are in place for the possession thereof. Any person found in possession of an unlicensed firearm or ammunition will be arrested and will face the full might of the law.“

Community members who are still in possession of estate firearms are welcome to contact the Randfontein FRC for guidance on how to forfeit or license those firearms. Their contact number is 011 767 2300.
