Shopkeeper attacked and robbed

Match stick robbery: Local store targeted and shopkeeper attacked with iron rod.

Three men, one of them armed, targeted a store and attacked the shopkeeper with an iron rod during a business robbery in the Bekkersdal area on Friday (22 September).

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson confirmed that the incident took place at about 11.10am.

“It is alleged a shopkeeper was alone inside the store when a man entered and asked for a match stick. As the shopkeeper was about to assist the man, two others entered the store, one of them carrying a firearm and pointing it at the shopkeeper.

“He allegedly ordered him to walk to the bedroom and lie on the bed. As he was on the bed, one of the suspects hit him with an iron rod on his leg and left him there. They ransacked the store and fled on foot. The shopkeeper managed to get out from the bedroom and shouted for help. Community heard him and they noticed the three suspects running.

“They gave chase and managed to catch one of them. The police were summoned and through investigations led by detective Sergeant Hendrick Moiloa a second suspect was apprehended.”

The two men were charged with business robbery and are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court some time today (26 September).

The acting police station commander Lieutenant Albert van Rooyen applauded the members for a job well done and thanked the community for the information that led to the arrest.
