Rape and murder among 423 arrests during long weekend period

More than 420 arrests were made for murder, illegal firearms, rape and more before and during the long weekend period.

Police on the West Rand made 423 arrests for numerous crimes from 18 to 25 September.

In Wedela, a 30-year-old man was arrested for the murder of a 29-year-old following a knife fight, while in Bekkersdal a suspect was arrested for business robbery due to the community cooperating with the police.

Two male suspects were also arrested for an attack on police officers in Kagiso on 23 September. They allegedly attempted to disarm one of the two officers on a collision scene in Rietvallei, Kagiso,” said Captain Apple Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

A struggle to keep control of the firearm allegedly resulted in a shot being fired. The bullet hit the second police officer in the leg. The police members were able to contain the situation and arrested the suspects, said Ernst.

Other successes include arrests for assault, burglary, rape and theft. Police-initiated arrests were also effected for driving under the influence of liquor, undocumented foreigners and drug-related crimes.

Major General Anna Mateisi, the West Rand Cluster commander expressed her satisfaction with the successes achieved by the members.

“We are proactively approaching the festive season and the police on the West Rand will continue in this manner throughout,” she emphasised.
