Man, 28, held, firearm seized

A 28-year-old man is to face three charges, one of them being in possession of an unlicensed firearm in the Bekkersdal area.

Bekkersdal Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the arrest was made on Wednesday, 20 September at about 9pm.

“Information received alleged that security officers were conducting their normal duties when they found the suspect attempting to steal Eskom electricity cables from one of the sub-stations in Zama Street.

“The security officers contacted the Bekkersdal Police after they apprehended the suspect. The police recovered an unlicensed firearm when they searched the man.

He was placed under arrest and will be charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, tampering with and damaging of infrastructure, as well as attempted theft.”

In early September, Randfontein Police also advised that an alarming number of firearms belonging to people who died years ago are in circulation in Randfontein and that residents are still in possession of firearms which are not properly licensed.

The FRC members will be calling on addresses of deceased firearm owners in order to establish what has happened to the firearms.

“The firearms haven’t been re-registered and no permits are in place for the possession thereof. Any person found in possession of an unlicensed firearm or ammunition will be arrested and will face the full might of the law.

“Community members who are still in possession of estate firearms are welcome to contact the Randfontein FRC for guidance on how to forfeit or license said firearms. Their contact number is 011 767 2300.”
