The Trudy’s Nest Luncheon Club formed part of the Go West! Cultural Day celebrations at the Kokosi Community Hall in Fochville on Saturday, 9 September.

The Toekies elderly in Cape Carnival regalia of multi-coloured polka dot hats, bow ties, sunglasses and painted faces, added more splendour to the cultural carnival. The event was organised by the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) and a variety of cultures on the West Rand – from the Setswana to Xhosa, Zulu to Sesotho – were showing off their regalia, dancing and singing.

Trudy Haywood, manager of the Toekies Luncheon club, could not hide her energy and excitement. They formed part of the dance train parade to the Molathlegi Hall where the township got an opportunity to open up the set for the evergreen, popular, multi-award winning gospel artist, Dr Rebecca Malope, who also present Gospel Time on SABC 2.

Pantsula dancers, Red For Danger from Mohlakeng and Simunye on Fire from Simunye in Bekkersdal brought a contemporary and modern-art township flavour to the cultural festival with their high-energy stage craft.

“It was indeed a good outing for our aged. We really enjoyed being part of the festivities,” said Trudy.

Faith Mazibuko (Gauteng MEC for Sport Art, Culture and Recreation), councillor Buyiswa Xulu (WRDM MMC for Sport, Art and Culture), Maki Skosana (Merafong MMC for Sport , Culture and Recreation) and Patrick Lipuli (Mogale City Mayor) graced this occasion with their presence.
