Tis Spring, but also snake season!

People are urged to be especially vigilant and keep an eye out for snakes during the spring season. Here's what you do ...

Spring is here in full force but the lovely climate means that some reptiles have started coming out of hibernation.

One of the most common of these is snakes. People are urged to be especially vigilant and keep an eye out on behalf of both yourself and your pet during this time.

The following is very important when seeing a snake:

Try to memorise its size, colour, markings (patterns on its skin), body type, head shape and eyes so that you can identify it.

This information will help doctors to provide you or your animal with efficient treatment, should you or your pet be bitten. Try to take a picture of the snake if it is safe for you to do so, but do not delay in getting your pet to a vet as soon as possible.

One of the most common dangerous snake bites in the community is that of a Rinkhals.

Please don’t kill snakes unnecessarily; rather call the Johannesburg Wildlife Vet’s 24hr number 071 248 1514 for safe removal.
