Hijacker nabbed after quick police response

They were dressed in overalls and appeared to be construction workers.

Vehicle drivers are again reminded to be aware of their surroundings at all times and not allow strangers into their vehicles.

Yesterday, 11 September at 1.30pm a 39-year-old man was the victim of a hijacking at the R41 and R14 crossing.

“Quick reaction by Randfontein Visible Policing members secured an arrest and the retrieval of a hijacked vehicle,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

“It is alleged that the victim stopped at the Brandvlei crossing (R41 and R14). He was driving a Kia bakkie,” she said.

He then noticed two hitchhikers. They were dressed in overalls and appeared to be construction workers. The driver allow them in but once inside the bakkie, one of them took out a hammer and tried to grab the keys of the vehicle. The driver jumped out and the hijackers drove off with the bakkie. The driver activated the tracking device.

Sergeants Nthabeleng Ngwenya and Levy Molepo of the Randfontein Police were travelling on the Zuurbekom road (R559) when they spotted the Kia.

They gave chase but then the Kia suddenly stopped. The suspects got out and ran in different directions. Ngwenya managed to arrest one of them. He was detained and the recovered vehicle was impounded.

“The members are applauded for their vigilance and the arrest of the suspect,” said Brigadier Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police station commander.
