Kidney disease? Visit your doctor if …
2 to 6 September was Kidney Week and the Herald found out it is recommended you visit your doctor if the following occur:
Our kidneys may be stressed by over-exercise, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, over the counter medication and pain medication.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has been estimated to affect as much as 15 per cent of the South African population.
It is recommended that you visit your doctor if:
• You are more tired than usual
• Have trouble sleeping
• Experience dry and itchy skin
• Feel the need to urinate more often
• See blood or foam in your urine
• Have persistent puffiness around the eyes
• Your ankles and feet are swollen
• Your appetite is poor
• If your muscles are continuously cramping
Your doctor can perform the following easy test to detect kidney disease:
• Urine dipstick for protein
• Urine sent to a laboratory to detect protein
• 24-hour urine collection test
• Blood test to investigate the kidney filtration rate
