The Randfontein Police have advised that an alarming number of firearms belonging to people who died years ago are in circulation in Randfontein.
Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said, “The Randfontein Police Firearm Registration Centre has therefore initiated a new project to address the unlawful possession of firearms.”
The project already had an impact after a 60-year-old widow was arrested for possession of her late husband’s firearm.
“She has been illegally in possession of the firearm for years. She was arrested and immediately released on bail. She will be appearing in court soon. The firearm was confiscated.”
Ernst added, “This should serve as an early warning to residents in the Randfontein area who are still in possession of firearms which are not properly licensed. The FRC members will be calling on addresses of deceased firearm owners in order to verify what happened to the firearms.
“The firearms haven’t been re-registered and no permits are in place for the possession thereof. Any person found in possession of an unlicensed firearm or ammunition will be arrested and will face the full might of the law.
“Community members who are still in possession of estate firearms are welcome to contact the Randfontein FRC for guidance on how to forfeit or license said firearms. Their contact number is 011 767 2300.”

The police call on the help of the community members to assist them with information. Anyone with information can contact the Crime Stop number – 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line – 32211 to report crime anonymously.
