RCA goes big during Arbor Week, Entrepreneurs day

Randfontein Christian Academy's learners recently celebrated National Arbor Week and got the feeling of what it's like to be an entrepreneur as well.

Learners from the Randfontein Christian Academy (RCA) recently went all out for National Arbor Week and got the feeling of what it’s like to be an entrepreneur as well – all in just one day.

National Arbor Week – celebrated from 1 to 7 September – serves to promote awareness of the need to plant and maintain indigenous trees throughout South Africa. RCA decided to get their hands into the ground and each plant a small succulent.

“We decided to plant succulents because we do not have space to plant trees, but we feel that the impact is still the same,” said Clarisse Visser, the school spokesperson.

The children could not wait to plant their succulents and put their very own names on them. The children each made a promise to take care of their succulent by giving it the correct amount of water. Teachers, Pastor Pretorius, his wife Leoniem and principal Dr Chris Ayres also had the opportunity to plant their succulents. Afterwards, the children had an entrepreneur’s day during which every child had to draw up a business plan.

“They had to show their input and expected output for the day,” said Clarisse.

According to Clarisse, the entrepreneur day is an extra activity to show the children the world of business and also educate them about the current economy. She said the children had a blast. They came up with creative ideas and made a little extra spending money.

“We gave them free rein to see what they would come up with and they came up with very creative ideas,” said Dr Ayres.

The children exceeded everyone’s expectations with hot dogs, juice, popcorn, raffles and a variety of sweets.

According to Clarisse, the day was a big success and the school plans to have more Arbor weeks as well as entrepreneur days.
