JUST IN: Man injured after falling off roof

Man transported to hospital after falling from roof at Greenhills Circle.

A man in his late 40s fell from a second-storey rooftop at the Greenhills Circle at about noon on Thursday, 31 August.

The Herald was told that he’d fallen while fixing a gutter – his ladder slipped and he ended up on the roof of the first floor.

Samuel Hallot, the injured man’s brother-in-law, was with him at the time of the accident and said the roof they were working on was so extremely slippery that the ladder just slid out from under him.

On arrival at the scene of the incident, the Herald found Netcare 911 paramedics and emergency services hard at work, stabilising the injured man on the roof of the first floor. At that stage, he was conscious and speaking to the paramedics.

Members of Netcare 911, Randfontein Fire Department and State Emergency Services work together to rescue fall victim.

All the emergency services personnel worked together to ensure that the man received the best care possible. They had great difficulty getting him off the roof, as the ladders used were not strong enough to hold the weight and secure his safety.

However, Mpo Seretsi, a Fire and Rescue Station officer who was already on scene, got the Randfontein Fire Department to give them a hand.

The man’s wife, Gaynor Kruger, arrived on scene during the rescue and was comforted by one of the Netcare 911 paramedics. She identified the victim as Leon Kruger, and said he had previously worked for the Randfontein Fire Department.

Eventually, the rescuers managed to get Kruger to the top of the fire truck, where they stabilised him again and then, working together like the A-Team, made a plan to get Kruger safely down the fire truck’s ladder, and transport him to the Krugersdorp Private Hospital.

The scene when the Herald arrived.

Bystanders commented on how they had just seen three emergency departments working together, and that none of them would have been able to carry out the rescue without the others.

Hoosen Ravat from Netcare 911 confirmed that Kruger was in a stable condition when they finally got him into the ambulance.
