More than 250 children hungry every day

A local NPO aims to keep children off the street and provide them with a safe environment where they can receive their basic needs.

After selling vetkoek on a daily basis to the community, Christina Phiri and Maria Moshoeshoe began to see the hunger in little children’s eyes.

Shortly after, both women decided to feed the hungry and help the poor in Brandvlei. They opened the Batho Tshiseletsong community centre, a non-profit organisation that provides food for school children.

“Some days, the food we provide is the only food the little children get,” said Anna.

The organisation also aims to keep children off the street and provide them with a safe environment where they can receive their basic needs. The organisation first started with 70 children, but the need for food got so big that they are currently serving more than 250 children on a daily basis.

“These children, aged one and upwards, are very grateful and this makes my heart happy,” said Maria.

However, the organisation uses approximately 10kg of rice and potatoes per day, and all the money to pay for them comes from the pockets of Maria and Christina.

“We want to help so many more children, even families, but we need support from the community,” said Maria.

The organisation is thus seeking any assistance from the public or business owners to help them continue feeding the poor.

“Currently we are operating outside in Badirile in Brandvlei, but we need to get the children into a shelter especially with the rainy season upon us,” said Christina.
