Two arrested for tuck-shop burglary

Two men were arrested after targeting a local tuck-shop and being in possession of the stolen goods.

Two suspects aged 31 and 33 are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court soon after a tuck-shop break-in on Saturday, 19 August.

They both face charges of being in possession of stolen property and business burglary.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, “It is alleged the owner closed his tuck-shop at about 8.30pm the day before (18 August). The following morning, at about 4.45am, he was awoken by a phone call from a concerned member of the community informing him about a break-in at the shop.

“The witness told the victim he knew who the perpetrators were,” Lefakane said.

The owner then rushed to the shop and contacted the police. According to Lefakane, a case of business burglary was registered and information regarding the suspects was communicated to the police.

Constable Joseph Thembani then followed up on the information which led him to arrest the two suspects who were still in possession of the stolen items.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander was pleased with the arrest and thanked the community for giving information that led to the arrest.

“This must serve as an eye-opener to other community members who find it difficult to share information with the police,” Nkhwashu said.
