Girl, 17, raped by her dad’s friend

Man in his 40s in police custody after dragging young girl to his home, raping her.

Local police arrested a man in his early 40s on Sunday, 20 August, for raping a teenage girl earlier this month.

Constable Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson told the Herald the offence was committed at about 2am on 5 August.

“It is alleged the 17-year-girl went to collect her house key from her brother, when she was accosted by a known male (allegedly her father’s friend) who dragged her to his shack,”Lefakane said.

She added the suspect allegedly instructed the victim to undress and he then penetrated her without a condom. The suspect then threatened the woman. He then went on the run. On Sunday, the woman saw the suspect at a house in Simunye and the Bekkersdal Police were contacted.

Detective Constable Thendo Manyama and Constable Bongani Mncube swiftly responded to the call and followed up on the information. They managed to arrest the suspect who will be charged with rape.

The suspect has already made a brief court appearance.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended the members for their swift reaction and applauded them for a job well done. He urged the community to refrain from walking alone at night.

“It is not safe, especially for women, as they become victims of crime,” he said.
