West Rand Cluster Commander ‘s message to women

Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in – Major General Anna Mateisi to women.

Major General Anna Mateisi, the West Rand Cluster Commander, Gauteng Women’s network champion and National Women’s Network Deputy Chairperson, encourages women to be the best they can be.

While the country observes and acknowledges the month of August as Women’s Month, the West Rand Cluster Police are doing the same.

The West Rand Women’s network will therefore be celebrating the month by pampering female employees with a three-day trip to Durban. The programme includes Employee Health and Wellness (EHW), addressing women on their responsibilities at their workplace as well as at home. Mateisi will also be addressing them on the code of conduct as well as the dress code and how to unleash their potential. The forum is led by her as well.

“This iron lady is applying leadership skills that are equal to the teachings of the late Nelson Mandela.

‘Leading from the back’ – meaning that the leader should step back when the group operates and step in front only when there is need for her to lead from the front – is a strategy that clearly exposes and gives junior officers the leadership roles and strength in their decision-making,” said Constable Lucky Matome, the Tarlton Police spokesperson.

Mateisi said, “As women, particularly, there are hurdles which makes the journey upward difficult. The rise towards positions of power and influence in a myriad spheres is especially challenging. Whether forging their own paths or following in the footsteps of those who’ve gone ahead, these trailblazers, innovators and explorers can encourage, motivate and push us to reach new heights.”

Women increasingly occupy top-ranking positions and roles in many traditionally male-dominated industries.

“Women such as Mateisi portray themselves in this environment as very adaptable and self-motivated. Her courage is clearly visible to those who work closely with her,” Matome said.

Mateisi believes a combination of education and hard work will always yield good results and reveal the potential women have.

“Unfortunately, some women underestimate and undermine themselves. As the Provincial Women’s Network Champion, my team and I have to ensure that we address issues that affect our members, whether they be personal or work-related. We strive to find ways to intervene and assist where we can. We are privileged that our organisation is well-equipped to help all our members,” she said.

“Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. And when you stumble, keep faith,” she added.

“Mateisi is a humble leader who is aware of her surroundings and knows her paths. She is not afraid to ask questions to bring herself up to date with information. She accepts advice from junior members and doesn’t hesitate to appreciate members for their inputs. Salute, Mbokodo [acknowledging the Major General with praise and honour],” said Matome.
