330 arrests made, but police still concerned

The West Rand Cluster Management is very concerned about the growing number of attacks on small-holdings – Cluster Commander Major General Anna Mateisi.

Police officers within the West Rand Cluster conducted numerous crime prevention operations throughout last week.

The operations were well executed, and they managed to make 330 arrests in seven days. The suspects were arrested for a variety of crimes, ranging from serious to less serious offences.

“Arrests were made for crimes such as house robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of stolen motor vehicles, attempted murder, rhino poaching and possession of suspected stolen goods,” said Constable Lucky Matome, Spokesperson for the West Rand Cluster.

The police treated each and every offence equally seriously as they also made arrests in liquor-related crimes, such as driving under the influence and selling liquor without a licence. Some suspects were also nabbed for shoplifting and trespassing.

In a separate incident, a female was shot and wounded during a house robbery on a plot near Rietfontein, which is within the Muldersdrift policing precinct. It is alleged that the police were summoned to the scene of the crime and found the victim lying in a pool of blood.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had been shot in her upper back during a robbery at her place of residence. It is not clear how many suspects were involved in this heartless crime,” said Matome.

Cellphones, a home theatre system and an undisclosed amount of money were stolen.

Not much information could be obtained from the victim as she was critically injured. She was taken to the nearest hospital for immediate medical attention.

The West Rand Cluster Management has expressed its extreme concern about the growing number of such attacks. The cluster commander, Major General Anna Mateisi, has since tasked the Cluster Trio Task Team to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The police are now investigating a case of murder and armed robbery. An appeal is made to anyone who might have information to assist in the investigation of this matter to please contact the Muldersdrift Police on 011 952 4600, or the West Rand Trio Task team on 079 496 6288, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information may be given anonymously.

“The police members truly showed character and dedication with the hard work they put into securing these arrests,” said Matome.
