Mohlakeng school gets helping hand

A school in Mohlakeng with real social challenges of whose parents are mostly unemployed gets much-needed donation.

Matlapaneng Primary School in Mohlakeng was the beneficiary of a Mandela Day initiative during which Women in Construction (WIC) donated food parcels and school uniforms to needy pupils.

The involvement of WIC came after James Mokolobate who is a resident, a popular hair stylist and a social activist in Mohlakeng saw the need at the school and recommended them.

“This school is a school with real social challenges. Most of the parents are unemployed and have no means of income and pupils rely on the school feeding scheme,” he said.

Father Thato Molipa, who is the school chaplain and rector of St Matthews Anglican Church in Soweto added that Mandela Day is about selflessness and servitude. “All of us should be servants and be there for those in need,” he said.

Mapontsho Mopeli, the WIC deputy chairperson, indicated that this is what her organisation stood for. “We want to build houses, but we want them to be homes.”

Nozipho Didiza Ndlela, a DA councillor in the Rand West City Local Municipality who is also part of WIC said their involvement was to care for an African child in need, and that was why they had come to Matlapaneng.

WIC is committed to attending to other needs the school may have in future, such as the kitchen and school hall, where the facilities are not good enough.
