A man posing as a Randfontein police officer was arrested yesterday for being in possession of numerous weapons.
He had money, hand grenades, a uniform (possibly military), a variety of types of ammunition, digital scales and stones believed to be fake diamonds in his possession.
Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson explained, “A woman reported a case about a kidnapping in the Free State. She was allegedly contacted by an unknown man, who said he was a Sergeant from the Randfontein area and that he had arrested her husband for possession of diamonds, but no case would be opened if she deposited a large amount of money into a specific bank account.
“The woman immediately went to police where she reported the matter. The West Rand Trio Task team was contacted, since the allegation was made that the matter had taken place somewhere in Randfontein. Intensive investigation followed. The team worked tirelessly throughout the night, and arrested a 38-year-old suspect in Evaton – a township north of Sebokeng in the Emfuleni region of Gauteng – on the morning of Friday, 4 August. The woman’s husband has been released, and is safe at home.”

The police have established that the suspect is not a police officer and that no links to the police could be found.
“This is not the first incident of this nature. The West Rand Police wishes to warn potential victims who are lured into similar situations.
Any transaction that is too good to be true, should be refrained from,” said the Cluster Commander, Major General Anna Mateisi.
