Bekkersdal Police managed to arrest nine members of a heavily armed gang while they were approaching the entrance of a local school recently. They are aged between 18 and 30.
According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the arrests came after they had received information about youngsters intending to attack learners at a school in the area.

Lefakane explained the school was closely monitored by the crime-prevention team led by Captain Nokuthula Sebonyane. At about 2.30pm, while the officers were patrolling, they spotted a group of young men heavily armed with axes, pangas, Rambo knives and iron rods approaching the school entrance.
“When they noticed the police vehicle, they started running in different directions, but the police managed to arrest nine of them,” Lefakane said.
The nine suspects will be charged with being in possession of dangerous weapons.
Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander applauded the members for their swift reaction and their dedication towards their duties.
“We have saved these young people from committing serious offences. We hope these arrests will serve as a warning to those who escaped arrest,” he added.
