Family member found guilty of assault on minor

A family member was sentenced to five years in prison for assault GBH of child.

A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to five years behind bars for the assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm of a child in June last year.

The case was finalised in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court recently.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, the man was a family member of the child.

“It was alleged the man assaulted a child aged 10 with a belt. The child sustained injuries to his face and his body, and had to receive medical treatment.

The case was reported to the Randfontein Police and assigned to the Krugersdorp Family Violence, Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit.

“Warrant Officer Marie Strooh investigated the matter and the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident had been reported. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for the assault on the minor. The name of the accused is being withheld to protect the victim,” Ernst said.

Brigadier Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander congratulated the investigating officer as well as the National Prosecuting Authority on the stance which was taken in this matter.

“We are striving to stamp out all acts of violence against women and children. This investigation and the ultimate sentence should serve as a warning to all people who are abusing women and children,” Manamela said.
