Baby Sanctuary gets surprising donation from school

Founder of local baby sanctuary pleads with pregnant young women not to abort or abandon babies that they cannot look after, and to rather leave them with organisations that can take care of them.

The Just in Time Baby Sanctuary in Greenhills recently received a surprise visit and a blessed donation from Curro Krugersdorp Independent School.

Georgina Caetano opened the sanctuary a year ago. It’s a temporary place of safety, similar to The Cradle of Hope House of Restoration in Krugersdorp, an NGO that is completely dependent on the faith and good will of the community.

The Herald was invited by the school to witness this occasion, and the look on Georgina’s face when she received five baby cots, a host of baby products and a delivery of soup, was worth waiting for.

A group of learners, and Samantha Smit (Operational Head of the high school), Roxanne Coetzer (school’s marketer), Sylvia Gurnell (teacher at Curro Primary and coordinator of the outreach programme) and Arno Viljoen (Curro’s facility manager) were all present at the handover of the donations.

Ceorgina was selected by Curro to receive these donations, but she only found out about them last week. The learners themselves, their parents and the school all helped to collect the goods. Some of the learners present at the handover were Nomvula Chasakara, Shaina Roodt, Nianca Kempenaar, Blaine Kieck, Ettienne Beukes and Kayla Padoa.

Georgina thanked the school from the bottom of her heart and told the learners how lucky they are to come from a privileged background, in comparison to the babies at the sanctuary, who are from very different backgrounds.

“Please tell your fellow learners, friends, family, and anybody else that falls pregnant at a young age or that has an unwanted pregnancy that there are options other than having an abortion or abandoning a child in a dustbin or the veld,” Georginia pleaded.

“They can call me or any other baby sanctuary or a social worker for help,” she added. At this stage Georgina has three babies, aged two, three and six months old respectively, and two toddlers, one aged two, and the other two- and-a-half years old, in her care.

She decided to name the baby sanctuary in honour of her late son, Justin, who had passed away in a car crash at the age of 17, thus the name – Just In Time Baby Sanctuary.
