A 36-year-old man was arrested by the Bekkersdal Police shortly after he raped a 5-year-old girl on Wednesday, 26 July.
The incident happened at 3.30pm at Silvercity in Bekkersdal.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said it is alleged the mother sent her child to a nearby house to drop off a friend’s jersey. She became worried when her child did not return.
“She went to check on her child and saw her walking towards her, crying. She then informed her mother that a man known to her had taken her to a shack and hurt her,” said Lefakane.
The police were contacted and investigation revealed that the child had been vaginally penetrated.

The man in question was arrested immediately, and is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on charges of rape.
The Bekkersdal station commander, Colonel Nkhwashu, commended the officers for their swift reaction. “We will ensure that the suspect remains behind bars and that justice will be served,” he said.
