The Red Eye poles are strategically placed at shopping centres, in residential areas and/ or on commercial properties. Four to eight CCTV cameras are fitted per pole. Many residents in and around Greenhills, Bootha Smallholdings and Loumarina Smallholdings would have noticed the red poles.

Live CCTV images are streamed from the Red Eye to the EPR Security control room.

“This is a community project, as the Red Eye is not specifically focused on one property. For instance, it keeps a watchful eye on a residential area,” said Booysen.

He continued saying, “The Red Eye CCTV footage can be used against an accused in court”.

The success of the Red Eye depends on the cooperation of role-players – residents, the relevant CPFs, local municipality, police and local security service provider – in combating crime in Randfontein and its surrounds.

Boyce said, “This is a tremendous tool available to residents and especially CPF patrollers in identifying and locating suspicious activity in our area that we would not even have been aware of”.

Molokomme added, “The Red Eye is already of major help to police. In areas where these Red Eyes are functional, crime has declined, especially in Loumarina. Stock theft in Loumarina also has decreased dramatically.”

All three parties agreed that with this partnership and the help of residents, crime in Randfontein will be combated.
