Pedestrian, 25, critical after being hit by bakkie

Pedestrian in his 20s 'critical' after being hit by bakkie in Randfontein's CBD yesterday.

A 25-year-old pedestrian sustained critical injuries after being hit by a bakkie on Main Road in the Randfontein CBD on Monday afternoon (24 July).

The incident took place at about 2.10pm. The entire intersection had to be closed after the accident.

ER24 said paramedics found the man lying in the middle of the road. The bakkie that allegedly had hit him was found parked a short distance away.

“Paramedics assessed the man and found he had sustained numerous injuries and was in a critical condition. He was treated for his injuries and received several advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the man was transported to Leratong Hospital from where he was later airlifted by the ER24 Oneplan helicopter to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for urgent care,” said Russel Meiring, ER4 spokesperson.

The driver of the bakkie was assessed and found to have escaped injury. The exact details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

According to a witness, the victim was in a local pharmacy minutes before the accident occurred.

Errnes Oosthuizen, a local resident and business owner said, “The man ran across the road without looking left or right. The traffic light was green for oncoming traffic.” He added that the man hit the ground approximately 20 metres from the point of impact.

Oosthuizen alleged the driver of the bakkie is traumatised and not to blame. According to eyewitnesses, the local pharmacy nurse assisted the victim before paramedics arrived. “The nurse saved that man’s life,” said Oosthuizen.

He added that he is very concerned as it has been the fourth person in just over a month to be knocked over at the same intersection.

“I am worried that people will lose their lives if the Traffic Department does not look into the problem,” said Oosthuizen.
