Sponsorships from the Chinese Embassy and other Chinese organisations in South Africa treated the elderly on Mandela Day,.

Members of the Krugersdorp Cluster celebrated Mandela Day at Mogale City Centenary Hall on Tuesday, 18 July.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, said 250 senior citizens from the 13 precincts in the Cluster were pre-selected to receive gifts to assist in poverty relief.

“Sponsorships from the Chinese Embassy and other Chinese organisations in South Africa ensured that these elderly citizens each received a food parcel and a blanket today,” she said.

In his support address, Jianmin Qu, from the Chinese delegation, indicated that the resident Chinese community is proud to assist the elders of South Africa.

“In Chinese culture, the appreciation of the elderly is to acknowledge their wisdom and to show respect. That is what we want to showcase today” said Qu.

The eldest recipient, the 109-year-old Zenzele Mita Ndebele from Kagiso, was overjoyed to receive this token of caring. The West Rand Executive Mayor, Councillor Boyce Maneli and the Mogale City Mayor, Councillor Patrick Lipudi, also graced the event with their presence.

The West Rand Cluster Commander, Major General Anna Mateisi, expressed her appreciation to the Chinese Embassy and other sponsors.

“Your partnership in this event was paramount. Without your inputs and donations, none of this would have been possible. The West Rand Police are proud to pay tribute to the late Mandela in this fashion. We have two hands, one is to help yourself, the second one is to help others,” said Major General Mateisi.
