Mayor Maneli delivered a message of hope and added some humour to the celebration. The theme of his speech was: ‘Take action, inspire change’.

We should not let our towns die down. We must grow,” he said.

Sibanye Gold sponsored each guest with a warm blanket while the WRDM and Bonang Masikule Shoe Manufacturers donated 120 pairs of school shoes to be distributed to schools in the West Rand. Sibanye Gold managed to get a total of 1 070 blankets to be distributed as the week’s celebrations continue.

Each guest also received a colourful bag with refreshments and were entertained by outstanding performances by cultural dancers, a choir and a poet. Maneli and the oldest citizen of Toekomsrus, Mita Senzeni Ndebele, 109, also cut the Mandela birthday cake together.

International Mandela Day celebrations will continue until Friday, 21 July.
